A coin made from silver. It is believed that the first silver coins with a fixed shape, fineness, and weight were minted in Greece around the 7th century BC. In Japan, the Wado silver coin is the oldest, but the oldest silver coin in full circulation is the Keicho silver coin. Silver coins have been considered standard currency alongside gold coins since ancient times, but because silver was produced in greater areas and in greater quantities, silver coins were actually used more often, and were particularly widely used in Mediterranean trade in the 13th and 14th centuries. However, as the gold standard came into widespread use in the second half of the 19th century, silver coins generally came to be used as secondary currency.
