An old city in the northwest of the Yokote Basin in the south-central part of Akita Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. The city is located near where the Mariko River joins the Omono River, and flourished as a river port during the Edo period. A village-style shopping street stretching 3km in length has developed and is the commercial center of the city and the surrounding area. The basin is covered with large paddy fields, producing a large amount of Sendai North rice. The Ou Main Line and the Akita Expressway run through the city, and the Akita Shinkansen (Tazawako Line) opened in the spring of 1997. The fireworks festival held in August on the banks of the Omono River attracts many tourists. In March 2005, it merged with Kamioka Town, Nishisenboku Town, Nakasen Town, Kyowa Town, Senboku Town, Ota Town, and Minami-Tono Village in Senboku County to become a city, Daisen City. 104.69 km2 .
