Striped tuna (striped) - garganey
A bird of the Anatidae family (illustration). It breeds in the mid-latitudes of Eurasia and migrates to southern Europe, northern Africa, and southern Asia to spend the winter. Asian species breed in southern Siberia and mainly spend the winter in China. In Japan, it is a migratory bird that passes through mainly in spring and autumn, and can be seen in September in autumn and April in spring, but its numbers are small compared to other duck species. However, there are rare species that breed in northern Japan. It mainly lives in freshwater areas such as lakes, swamps, ponds, and marshes. It is about 38 cm long, about the same size as a teal, and the male is chestnut brown from the face to the sides of the neck, with small white spots scattered densely, and a prominent white eyebrow.

カモ目カモ科の鳥(イラスト)。ユーラシア大陸の中緯度地方で繁殖し,ヨーロッパ南部,アフリカ北部,アジア南部へ渡って越冬する。アジアのものはシベリア南部で繁殖し,おもに中国で越冬する。日本ではおもに春秋に通過する旅鳥で,秋は9月,春は4月に見られるが,他のカモ類に比べて数が少ない。しかし,北日本ではまれに繁殖するものがいる。主として湖,沼,池,湿地などの淡水域にすむ。全長約38cm,コガモとほぼ同大で,雄は顔から首側面にかけて栗色で,小さな白斑が密に散在し,白い顕著な眉斑がある。
