1862‐87 Russian poet. Born in St. Petersburg to a Jewish civil servant's family, he lost his parents at an early age and went on to become a soldier at the military academy, but he fell ill with pulmonary tuberculosis and retired in 1884 to recuperate. He began writing poetry at the age of 16, and in 1885 he received the Pushkin Prize for his first collection of poems. The motifs of his lyric poetry are the expression of the divided inner drama of adolescent doubt, despair, and rebellion, and he has a gentle, sing-song tone that he inherited from Lermontov and NA Nekrasov, and it is said that he set his poems to music and sang them widely.
