Natsudomari Peninsula

A peninsula jutting out into Mutsu Bay in central Aomori Prefecture. It divides the southern part of Mutsu Bay into Noheji Bay to the east and Aomori Bay to the west. An extension of the Ou Mountains, it is a plateau with almost no lowlands. The highest point is Mizugasawayama, 323 meters above sea level. The western side of the peninsula is subsiding and has sea cliffs, while the eastern side is uplifted and has shallow seas with bedrock. In front of Natsudomari Cape at the northernmost point is Oshima Island, 3 kilometers in circumference, which is connected by a concrete bridge. At the northern end is an unmanned white lighthouse. Tsubakiyama, near the northern tip of the peninsula, is a national natural monument as the northernmost limit of natural growth of camellias, and Asako Coast in the southeast is a special natural monument designated as "Kominato's swans and their migration site." The entire area is part of Asamushi-Natsudomari Prefectural Natural Park.

青森県中央部、陸奥湾(むつわん)に突き出た半島。陸奥湾南部を東の野辺地湾(のへじわん)と西の青森湾に分ける。奥羽山脈の延長部で、台地状をなし低平地はほとんどない。最高点は水ヶ沢山の323メートル。半島の西側は沈降性で海食崖(がい)がみられ、東側は隆起性で岩盤が延び浅海である。最北端の夏泊崎前方には周囲3キロメートルの大島があり、コンクリート橋で結ばれる。北端部に白亜の無人灯台が建つ。半島北端に近い椿山(つばきやま)はツバキ自生北限地として国の天然記念物、南東部の浅所海岸(あさどころかいがん)は「小湊のハクチョウおよびその渡来地(こみなとのはくちょうおよびそのとらいち)」として特別天然記念物に指定されている。なお全域が浅虫夏泊県立自然公園となっている。
