Since 1899 it has been officially called the Ordo Cisterciensium Reformatorum, and since 1902 it has been called the Ordo Cisterciensium Strictioris Observantiae. The name Trappist comes from the name of the reformed monastery, La Trappe, in the Orne department of Normandy, France. The monastery was reformed in 1664 by Armand-Jean Le Bouthillier de Rancé (1626-1700), who added strictness to the original Cistercian monastic life while still adhering to it. …
