...His father was a strong, robust and ambitious merchant, and Kafka was tormented by the desire to live within his father's sphere throughout his life, but later he would incorporate this conflict into his works through a strong process of introspection and abstraction. After a relatively solitary childhood, he attended a German-speaking gymnasium and entered the German University in Prague in 1901, where he met his lifelong friend Max Brod (1884-1968). In 1906 he received his doctorate in law, and in 1908 he became a civil servant at the Bohemian Workers' Accident Insurance Bureau in Prague. During this time, he was seen to have inclinations towards socialism, anarchism, the Czech independence movement, naturopathy, and East Jewish culture, but his greatest interest was in how to live through writing. ...
