A local dynasty (930-1090) that ruled Tabaristan and Jurrjan in northern Iran. It was founded by Mardabij (reigned 930-935), a member of the local royal family of Gilan, who gained independence in Tabaristan. At one time, the dynasty expanded its rule to the areas of Isfahan and Hamadan. It was then pushed back by the advance of the Samanids and the rise of the Buyids, but managed to hold on to Tabaristan and Jurrjan. Stability was finally restored during the latter half of the reign of Qabus (reigned 977-1012), and famous scholars and writers such as Biruni were active at the court of Jurrjan. After Qabus, it became subordinate to the Ghazniids and then the Seljuks, and its power weakened. It disappeared from history around 1090 when the Assassins began to operate in Tabaristan.
