[Died] March 21, 1942. Vancouver. Canadian politician. Educated at Oxford University, he became a Methodist minister in 1900. However, he was more interested in social issues than religion, so he left the clergy in 1907 and began working for the Canadian Social Welfare Union in 1913. During this time he wrote two books, Strangers within Our Gate (1909) and My Neighbor (11), which are highly regarded for their focus on immigration in North America and the role of the church in society. He held various jobs while developing a strong interest in socialism, and in 1919 he led the Winnipeg strike. In 1921 he was elected to the federal House of Commons as a member of the Labour Party, and in 1932 he was nominated to lead the Cooperative Federal Party when it was formed. In 1939 he opposed Canada's entry into World War II, and was a staunch pacifist.
