In the Middle Ages, it was also written as "natsusei." It means things paid in the summer, i.e. annual taxes due in the summer. In contrast to natsusei, there are "harunsei" and "akinsei," which were due in the spring and autumn, respectively. As seen in historical documents as "natsumugi" (summer wheat) and "mugijishi" (wheat jishi), barley and wheat were generally used, but there were also cases where the payment was made in cash. Article 101 of the "Yukishi Shinhatsu" (1556), one of the laws of the warring states, states, "The collection of annual taxes from the villages is to be made from the Boy's Day of May, and to be completed by the last day of June. 中世には〈夏済〉とも書く。夏季に上納される済物,すなわち納期を夏とする年貢などを意味する語。夏成に対比されるのが〈春成〉〈秋成〉で,それぞれ春と秋を納期とするものであった。〈夏麦〉〈麦地子〉などと史料にあるように,一般的には大麦・小麦など麦地子が多かったが,銭納の場合もみられる。戦国家法の一つ《結城氏新法度》(1556)の101条に〈郷中より年貢の取様,夏年貢は五月端午の日より,六月晦日に立て切るべし。
