Year of death: September 30, 1600 (November 5, 1600) Year of birth: Year of birth unknown. A military commander in the Azuchi-Momoyama period. Commonly known as Shinza (or Shinzaburo), he was Okura-taifu. A native of Omi Province (Shiga Prefecture), he first served Niwa Nagahide, and gradually gained important positions due to his talents in administration and finance. After Nagahide's death in April 1585, he assisted Nagahide's successor Nagashige, but was eventually employed by Hideyoshi and worked as an administrative official. He supervised the transportation of military provisions, men and horses during the Kyushu Expedition in 1582 and the Siege of Odawara in 1583, and served as the magistrate of the Taiko land survey in Omi, Echizen and other areas, and was responsible for managing the Toyotomi family's treasury and fiefs. In 1592, he shared in the construction of Hizen Nagoya Castle, and in 1593, Fushimi Castle. In June of the same year, he was appointed lord of Minakuchi Castle in Omi with a fief of 50,000 koku, which was then increased to 120,000 koku, and he was appointed chamberlain of the fourth rank. In July of 1598, he was appointed one of the five magistrates. In addition to being a magistrate, Masaie also served as a yohtsu (lower rank). In the Battle of Sekigahara in the second year of the same year, he belonged to the Western Army (the side of Ishida Mitsunari), and shortly after Tokugawa Ieyasu departed for his expedition to Aizu in June, he left Minakuchi Castle and entered Osaka Castle, and then marched to Ise together with Ankokuji Ekei to participate in the siege of Anotsu Castle. In the decisive battle on September 15, he camped at Minamiyama, and when he heard of Mitsunari's defeat, he fled to Minakuchi Castle. However, he was attacked by Ikeda Nagayoshi of the Eastern Army, and on September 30, he opened his castle and committed suicide. His head was displayed at Sanjogawara in Kyoto on October 1. His grave is in Anjoji Temple in Omi. <References> "Nagatsuka Keifu" (Kenichi Niki) Source: Asahi Japanese Historical Biography: Asahi Shimbun Publications Inc.
