…The term medical finger was already used in the Greek and Roman era because it was believed that if medicine was mixed with this finger, it would be immediately obvious if it was poisonous. Even today, there is a widespread superstition that it is bad to apply ointments or scratch the skin with any finger other than the ring finger. The Romans called it the digitus annularis, and the Anglo-Saxons called it the gold finger or annular finger because it had an unbranched blood vessel (or nerve) connecting the heart to this finger, and it was believed that if a gold ring was placed on this finger, the heart would be captured. Even today, engagement rings are worn on this finger. In Rabelais's Book III, Pantagruel, there is a story about a beautiful gold ring studded with precious cattails being placed on a woman's ring finger. …
