Conductor, cellist, and music educator. Born in Tokyo. After studying at Sophia University, he studied cello under Klengel at the Leipzig Conservatory from 1923 to 1927 (Taisho 12 to Showa 2), and under Feuermann at the Berlin Music University from 1930 to 1932. After returning to Japan, he served as principal cellist of the New Symphony Orchestra until 1941. In 1942, he became a conductor, and often performed the premieres of Japanese works. After World War II, he established the "Music School for Children" in 1948 (Showa 23) with the aim of early musical education, laying the foundations for Toho Gakuen School of Music, and until 1972, he devoted himself to nurturing the next generation of musicians as professor and president. Many musicians came from his school, including conductor Seiji Ozawa, cellist Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi, and violinist Teiko Maebashi. In 1973, he was awarded the Person of Cultural Merit.
