This is an area of about 20 kilometers in eastern Hyogo Prefecture, stretching from the mouth of the Muko River, which flows along the border between Amagasaki and Nishinomiya, to the former mouth of the Minato River in Kobe. Miyamizu, a high-quality underground water suitable for sake brewing, springs up here, forming the five sake brewing areas known as the Nada Gogo. From the east, the five go are Nishinomiyago and Imazugo in Nishinomiya City, Togo (Fukae, Aoki, Uozaki districts) in Kobe's Higashinada Ward, Nakago (Sumiyoshi, Mikage, Ishiya, Tomyo districts), and Nishigo (Oishi, Iwaya, Midoro districts) in Nada Ward. In 1840 (Tenpo 11), Yamamura Tazaemon of Uozaki noticed that the Miyamizu water from Nishinomiya improved the quality of sake, so he brought it home and used it in sake brewing, and since then, Miyamizu has been used throughout the Nada region. Later, due to the development of coastal industrial areas, the Miyamizu area moved north. Sake brewing has also become more modern through technological development. There are museums built by sake brewing companies, such as the Hakutsuru Sake Brewery Museum, all over the country.
