Betel Chewing

Betel chewing is the practice of wrapping the kernel and lime of the betel nut (areca palm, commonly known as areca catechu ) in the leaves of the betel nut , a climbing plant in the pepper family, and chewing it in the mouth. The inside of the mouth turns crimson red while chewing, and the person then spits it out with saliva. Sometimes flavorings such as cloves and cardamom are added. Betel nuts contain alkaloids, which have a stimulant anesthetic effect, and have been widely cultivated and used as a masticatory chewing material in India, Southeast Asia, and Oceania since before Christ.

ヤシ科のアレカヤシ，通称ビンロウジュAreca catechuの種子(ベテル･ナット)の核と石灰を，コショウ科のつる性植物キンマPiper betleの葉で包み，これを口の中で嚙む習慣をベテル･チューイングと呼ぶ。嚙んでいると口中が朱赤色になり，これを唾液とともに吐く。チョウジ，カルダモンなどの香料を加えることもある。ベテル･ナットはアルカロイドを含み，興奮性の麻酔作用があり，紀元前よりインド，東南アジア，オセアニアの各地で咬嚙料masticatoryとして広く栽培･利用されてきた。
