Pathé's biggest rival was Gaumont. Thanks to the efforts of Louis Feuillade, who succeeded Alice Guy, the world's first female director, as both producer and director, Gaumont completely overtook Pathé and became the dominant force in French cinema by the mid-1910s. The pinnacle of this success was Feuillade's action series, films à épisodes (also called cinémas), which ranged from Fantômas (1913-14) to De La Roux (1915-16) and Judex (1917), which were not only a box-office success but also enthusiastic artists (especially the Surrealists, including Breton and Aragon).
