Miraculous Tale of Hasedera Temple - Hase-dera Miraculous Tale

A collection of tales about the miraculous powers of the Eleven-Headed Kannon, the principal image of Hasedera Temple in Nara Prefecture. Two volumes. Covering 1200-1209 (Shoji 2-Shogen 3). The editor is unknown. The author was a monk connected to Hasedera Temple, possibly its kanjin hijiri (monk who raised funds for the temple). The first volume contains 19 stories, and the second volume contains 33 stories, arranged roughly in chronological order. There is a marked tendency to elevate Hasedera Temple, as the stories are typical, general, or turn miraculous power stories from other temples into those of the Hase Kannon. Each tale tends to be descriptive in detail, including the names of the people involved and the dates. It is considered a projection of a method of making fundraising more effective by emphasizing the authenticity of the miracles.

奈良県の長谷寺の本尊十一面観音の霊験説話の集成。2巻。1200～09年（正治2～承元3）に成る。編者未詳。長谷寺関係の僧で、おそらくその勧進聖(かんじんひじり)か。上巻に19話、下巻に33話をそれぞれほぼ年代順に配列する。類型的、一般的、あるいは他寺の霊験説話を長谷観音の霊験に語り変えるなど、長谷寺を顕揚する姿勢が著しい。個々の説話は、登場人物の名、年月日を細かに叙述する傾向がある。霊験の真実性を強調して、勧進に効果あらしめる方法の投影とみなされる。
