Trap-Jaw Ants

Japanese: アギトアリ - あぎとあり(英語表記)Trap-Jaw Ants
Trap-Jaw Ants
An ant of the Trapezium genus, subfamily P. persicae. Found in tropical and subtropical regions of Southeast Asia, it nests under stones and fallen logs in forests. Worker ants are large, measuring 1-1.3cm in length, and are blackish brown to dark brown in color. Males and females other than worker ants have wings. They use their large jaws that open 180 degrees and a poisonous stinger at the end of their tail to catch and eat small insects. In Japan, they were confirmed to live in southern Kyushu, including Yakushima and Tanegashima, but since 2012 they have been discovered in succession in various parts of Honshu, including Osaka, Okayama, and Kanagawa prefectures.
