Power Line Communication

A method of making calls and communicating information using power lines (transmission lines, distribution lines, and indoor wiring) that are transmitting electricity. It is also called PLC. Power line carrier communication, which uses carrier waves up to 450 kilohertz (kHz) and has been used by electric power companies for a long time, is called low-speed PLC, while communication of 2 to 30 megahertz (MHz), which has been used only indoors since 2006, is called high-speed PLC. Microwave multiplex radio and optical fiber communication have been used for main systems in electric power companies, and optical fiber communication, communication line carrier, communication cable, and power line carrier (low-speed PLC) have been used for local systems. Power line carrier has the advantage of being able to form a communication network linked to the power transmission system, and has been used for telephones used for power supply command and maintenance, and for transmitting remote monitoring and control signals. In high-voltage distribution lines, it has been adopted as one of the communication methods in the distribution automation system, which monitors and controls switches from a distance to improve operation efficiency and reliability. Meanwhile, power line communications, which uses indoor power distribution lines, has come into common use for Internet communications within homes since the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications revised its ministerial ordinance in October 2006 to allow the use of frequencies between 2 and 30 MHz indoors only.

電力を送電中の電力線（送電線、配電線、屋内配線）を利用して通話や情報連絡を行う方式。PLCともよばれる。古くから電力会社で使用されている450キロヘルツ（kHz）までの搬送波を用いる電力線搬送通信は低速PLCとよばれるのに対し、2006年（平成18）以降、屋内のみで使用されるようになった2～30メガヘルツ（MHz）の通信を高速PLCとよんでいる。電力会社で主幹系に使用される通信には、マイクロ波多重無線および光ファイバー通信が、ローカル系の通信には光ファイバー通信、通信線搬送、通信ケーブルとともに電力線搬送（低速PLC）が用いられてきた。送電線を利用した電力線搬送は、送電系統とリンクした通信ネットワークを構成できる利点があり、給電指令や保線に用いる電話用や遠方監視制御信号伝送用などに用いられてきた。高圧配電線では、開閉器等を遠方より監視制御して運用の効率化や信頼度の向上等を図る配電自動化システムのなかで、一つの通信方式として採用されてきた。一方、屋内配電線を利用する電力線搬送通信については、2006年10月に総務省が、屋内に限り2～30メガヘルツの周波数使用を認める省令改正を行ったのを受けて、家庭内のインターネット通信用として一般に用いられるようになってきた。
