A biennial plant of the Brassicaceae family (APG classification: Brassicaceae). The stem is erect or branched from the base, 10-30 cm tall, and the entire plant is covered with stellate hairs. The basal leaves are spatula-elliptical, 2-4 cm long, 8-15 mm wide, irregularly toothed, and almost sessile. The stem leaves are 1-3 cm long, and the racemes bear yellow, four-petaled flowers. The petals are 2.5 mm long and broadly spatula-shaped, with two lobes at the tip and a claw at the bottom. The sepals are elliptical, 1.5-2 mm long, and four of the six stamens are long. The fruit is linear-elliptical, flattened, 6-8 mm long, densely hairy, and shorter than the stalk. The seeds are broadly elliptical and 0.4 mm long. Young seedlings are eaten, and the seeds are used as a traditional Chinese medicine. It grows in sunny places such as fields and river banks. There are about 400 species in this genus worldwide, and about 10 species in Japan, and they are widely distributed throughout Japan and the temperate zones of the Northern Hemisphere.
