Its Japanese name was given to it because of its resemblance to the nankakuran of the Lycopodium family, but it is actually the genus name of a fern related to the pinecone fern, which does not grow naturally in Japan (illustration). Like the pinecone fern, it is worthy of admiration for its unusual form, but it requires hot and humid conditions and is difficult to cultivate. It grows on the trunks of tree staghorn fern. The plant body is divided into underground stems and aboveground stems, and the underground stems are short, wiry, and branch out. They have rhizoids on the surface, but no roots. The aboveground stems arise from the underground stems and sometimes branch out into two. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
