Joraisi - Joraisi

Japanese: 如儡子 - じょらいし
Joraisi - Joraisi

A writer of Kanazoushi (Japanese traditional writings) from the early Edo period. Also known as Nyoraishi. His real name was Saito Chikamori, and his pen name was Setchoan Jiho. He served the Mogami family of Yamagata together with his father, Saito Chikugo no Kami Morihiro, but in 1622 (Genwa 8), he became a ronin when the Mogami family was abolished. He lost his father while he was wandering, and went to Edo. With the help of townspeople such as Toyodaya Kiemon, he worked as a yūhitsu (a writer) and a doctor, and wrote books during that time. In 1659 (Manji 2), his eldest son, Akimori, was summoned by Niwa Mitsushige of the Nihonmatsu domain, and together they moved to Nihonmatsu, where they spent their later years indulging in haiku poetry. He passed away on March 8, 1670. His grave is at Matsuoka-dera Temple in Matsuoka-cho, Nihonmatsu City. His works include the kana zoshi Kasho-ki (published in 1642) and Hyakuhachicho-ki (published in 1664), as well as copies of Hyakunin Isshu-sho and Kannin-ki.
