Vattel, Emmerich de
Born: April 25, 1714, Couvet, Neuchâtel
Died December 28, 1767. A Swiss jurist from Neuchâtel, and one of the leading international law scholars of the 18th century. He studied philosophy and ethics at the University of Basel and the University of Geneva, and became a diplomat in the service of the Duke of Saxony in Germany. His ideas were based on the natural law of the Enlightenment, and he was influenced by C. Wolff. His major work, Le Droit des gens ou principes de la loi naturelle, appliqués à la conduite et aux affaires des nations et des souverains (1758), was widely read and contributed greatly to the dissemination of international law.
