Summer purification ritual - Nagoshi no harai

Japanese: 夏越の祓 - なごしのはらい

Also known as the Summer Solstice Festival or Minazuki Purification. It refers to the last day of the sixth month of the lunar calendar, and along with New Year's Eve, it is considered a day of abstinence as the new season approaches. The Summer Solstice Festival at Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine in Osaka is famous and is now held on July 31st. Purification is achieved by presenting a paper doll at the shrine, but in some regions, cows and horses are taken to the sea or river to play. There are also summer solstice rituals in various regions in which purification is achieved by passing the animal through a ring of thatched grass.

夏越節供，水無月(みなづき)祓とも。旧暦６月晦日(みそか)をいい，大晦日とともに新しい季節に入る物忌(ものいみ)の日とされる。大阪市住吉大社の夏越祭が有名で，今は７月31日に行う。紙で作った形代(かたしろ)を神社に納めて祓とするが，牛や馬を海や川に連れていって遊ばせる地方もある。茅(ち)の輪をくぐらせて祓とする夏越神事も各地にある。
