Nag Hammadi (English spelling)
A town on the Nile River in Egypt, about 100 km upstream from the city of Luxor. In Arabic, it is called Naj' Ḥammādī. It is famous for the so-called Nag Hammadi documents, which were discovered near the town in 1945 by a farmer and whose facsimile edition was only recently completed. These documents are currently kept at the Coptic Museum in Cairo. Thirteen Coptic papyrus codexes (old manuscripts) copied in the 3rd and 4th centuries AD.
