Naxos [island] - Naxos
Located in the central Aegean Sea, it is the largest of the Greek Cyclades. The eastern part is mountainous, while the western part is a plain, producing marble, grapes, and olives. In mythology, it is the place where Theseus abandoned Ariadne. In ancient Greece, it was the center of Dionysus worship. In 1207, it became part of Venice and flourished. From the late 16th century until Greek independence, it was part of Turkey. The main city is Naxos. 428 km2 . Approximately 14,000 people (1990).
