Tanegashima

Japanese:
Tanegashima
Located about 35km south of the Osumi Peninsula. One of the Osumi Islands, it is a long, narrow island from north to south, with an area of 444.30km2 . It consists of Nishinoomote City, Nakatane Town, and Minamitane Town in Kagoshima Prefecture. To the west are Mage Island (Nishinoomote City) and Yakushima. The topography is low and flat, with the entire island being a plateau or gently sloping hill. The highest point is 282m. In the past, it was written as Tane Island or Tanegashima, and Tanegashima Province, which was equivalent to a province, was established. In 824, Tanegashima Province was annexed by Osumi Province, and thereafter Tanegashima became Kumage County of Osumi Province. Tanegashima was established as part of Shimazu Manor at the end of the Heian period. The Tanegashima clan, the lords of the island in the Middle Ages, is said to have originated when the Higo clan, vassals of the Nagoe clan, the lords of Shimazu Manor, came to the island as local lords. During the Muromachi period, under the rule of Tanegashima Tokiuji, the entire island is said to have converted to the Nichiren sect. Since ancient times, the island played an important role in the transportation of goods between the southern seas and the southern barbarians, and is known for the introduction of firearms to the island in 1543. In the early modern period, the island was under the control of the Kagoshima Domain and was the private domain of the Tanegashima clan, known as Tanegashima-go. Pastures were established, and salt was produced and sweet potatoes were cultivated. Currently, in addition to rice (early cultivation), sugarcane, sweet potatoes, tobacco, peanuts, ponkan, and tankan are cultivated. The fishing industry is centered on coastal fishing, and flying fish, tokobushi, shrimp, and squid are caught. The Tanegashima Space Center, which is a launch base for artificial satellites, is located in Minamitanecho. Regular ferries connect the island with Kagoshima and Yakushima, and the Tanegashima Airport, which opened in March 2006, is located in Nakatanecho. →Tanegashima Gun → Related topics Osumi Strait | Satsuma Islands | Tanegashima Tokitaka | Nansei Islands
