This dam is located in the Azumi area of Matsumoto City in the mid-west of Nagano Prefecture. It is an arch dam built on the Azusa River, and was completed in 1970 (Showa 45) by Tokyo Electric Power Co., Inc. over a period of six years. Its dam height is 155 meters, and it has a water storage capacity of 123 million tons. There are two dams downstream, Midono (95.5 meters high) and Inekoki (60 meters high), and the maximum output of the three dams is 623,000 kilowatts. It is the second largest hydroelectric power station in Japan after the Shintakase Power Station. It uses surplus electricity at night from the downstream Mizudono Dam to pump water. There is a six-story automatic control station on the right bank of the dam, and the power station is located directly below. This dam created an artificial lake, Lake Azusa (area 2.74 square kilometers), at the confluence of the Azusa River and the Naka River, but about 60 houses were submerged. Part of the lake water is used to irrigate the rice paddies and fields in the Matsumoto Basin.
