Birātnagar (English spelling)
Located in the southeastern corner of Nepal, near the Indian border, this is the country's largest industrial city. It has a population of 132,000 (1993). It is located in the swampy lowland of the Terai, at an altitude of about 100m. The surrounding area is the country's largest jute-producing region, and also produces rice, sugarcane, and timber. A jute factory built here in 1936 marked the beginning of the country's industrialization, and since then, in addition to jute processing, various industries have been established, including agricultural and forestry product processing such as rice milling, sugar refining, oil refining, and lumber, as well as cotton, nylon, plastic, and steel manufacturing. A major highway runs east-west across the southern part of the country to the north, and the city is also connected by road to Forbesganj in India.
