A port city in south-central Chile facing the Pacific Ocean. It is located about 10 km north-northwest of Concepcion, on a small peninsula on the southwest coast of Concepcion Bay, and serves as the city's outer port. As one of Chile's major ports, it is important for shipping lumber, leather, wool, furs, coal, etc., as well as being a fishing port and naval base. It is also an industrial center, with fish canning, flour milling, oil refining, and other industries located within the city, a modern steelworks in nearby Huachipato, and a chemical plant in San Vicente. In the bay, the Peruvian warship Huascar, captured by the Chilean Navy in 1879 after a fierce battle during the war with Bolivia and Peru over saltpeter resources at the end of the 19th century, is moored and open to tourists. It is connected to Concepcion by rail and road. Population: 246,853 (1992 estimate).
