Collections such as the Codex Callistus (12th century, Galicia), the Codex de Las Huelgas (13th-14th century, Old Castile), and the Scarlet Book of Montserrat (14th century, Catalonia) are valuable in the above sense. In addition, although not strictly religious music (music in churches), the 13th century compilation of the Odes to the Virgin Mary by Alfonso X contains more than 400 monophonic songs with lyrics in Galician (closely related to Portuguese), and is of great value both as a document and aesthetic. …
