Refers to a strong interest in one's own physical and mental uniqueness and a detailed description of it. It is translated as egoism. Stendhal was particularly fond of using this word to distinguish it from egoism, which means selfishness. "Egotism, so long as it is sincere, is a way of describing the human heart" (Stendhal, "Memoirs of Egotism"). According to J. Addison's The Spectator of July 2, 1714, the word originated from a hermit at the monastery of Port-Royal. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
