Nagano Shinkansen

This is the provisional nickname for the section between Takasaki (Gunma Prefecture) and Nagano, which opened earlier on the Hokuriku Shinkansen, one of the planned Shinkansen lines. Operated by East Japan Railway Company (JR East), it has a commercial mileage (actual mileage) of 117.4 km, and construction began in August 1989 (Heisei 1). At first, there was a time when it was considered to build it as a mini-shinkansen, but in December 1990, it was decided to build it as a full-scale shinkansen, and it opened on October 1, 1997, in time for the 1998 Winter Olympics to be held in Nagano Prefecture. In March 2015 (Heisei 27), the Hokuriku Shinkansen was extended to Kanazawa, and the Tokyo-Nagano section is now also called the Hokuriku Shinkansen.

The Takasaki-Nagano section, which opened in 1997, is made up of tunnels that account for 54% of the total length (including six tunnels over 5,000 meters long, the longest being the Gorigamine Tunnel between Ueda and Nagano at 15,180 meters), and the Takasaki-Karuizawa section has a continuous steep gradient of 30‰ (per mille) that is not found on other Shinkansen lines. With the opening of this section, the conventional Shinetsu Main Line's Karuizawa-Shinonoi section was transferred to the third-sector Shinano Railway, and the Yokokawa-Karuizawa section, which had a steep gradient of 66.7‰, was abolished.

整備新幹線の一つである北陸新幹線のうち、先行開業した高崎（群馬県）―長野間の暫定的な通称。東日本旅客鉄道（JR東日本）の運営、営業キロ（実キロ）数117.4キロ、1989年（平成1）8月着工。当初はミニ新幹線方式での建設が考えられていた時期もあったが、1990年12月にはフル規格の新幹線としての建設が決定し、1998年冬季オリンピックの長野県での開催に合わせて、1997年10月1日開業した。2015年（平成27）3月には北陸新幹線が金沢まで延伸し、東京―長野間についても北陸新幹線とよばれることとなった。

　1997年に開業した高崎―長野間は、トンネル区間が全体の54％を占め（うち長さ5000メートル以上のトンネル6か所、最長は上田―長野間の五里ヶ峰トンネルの1万5180メートル）、また高崎―軽井沢間にはほかの新幹線にはない30‰（パーミル）の連続急勾配(こうばい)がある。同区間の開業に伴い、在来線の信越本線は、軽井沢―篠ノ井(しののい)間が第三セクターのしなの鉄道に移管され、66.7‰の急勾配区間であった横川―軽井沢間は廃止された。
