An old city in central Tokyo. It was incorporated as a city in 1967. In January 2001, it merged with neighboring Hoya City to the east and was renamed Nishitokyo City. Located on the Musashino Plateau, the city center developed as a post town on the Ome Kaido road. With the opening of the Seibu Railway in 1927, it rapidly became a residential area. Since the 1960s, large housing estates such as Hibarigaoka have been built on the site of former munitions factories, straddling the old Hoya City and Higashikurume City, and it has developed into a residential and industrial district on the outskirts of Tokyo. It is home to the University of Tokyo Faculty of Agriculture Farm. Area: 6.80 km2 . Population: 75,997 (1998). Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
