A village in Ogachi County, in the southeastern tip of Akita Prefecture. Population 3,568 (1995). The village is a series of 1,000m-high mountain peaks that make up the Mahiru Mountains. Most of the village area is covered with forests, mainly broadleaf trees, and the Naruse River flows north through the center. Since the early modern period, the village has relied on sericulture and tobacco cultivation due to the lack of arable land, but even today the amount of arable land is small and many people work away from home. The mountains are used for grazing beef cattle, and there are village-run ranches Yanagisawa, Nagakura, and Yakeishidake Natural Pasture. The area around Mt. Kurikoma on the border with Iwate and Miyagi prefectures has been designated as Kurikoma Quasi-National Park. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
