Also known as the Covenant of Strasbourg. A treaty between the kings of East and West Franks in 842. After the death of Louis the Pious, his three sons fought for power, and his second son, Louis II (King of Germany), the first king of East Franks, and his youngest son, Charles II (King of the Bald), the first king of West Franks, cooperated to oppose his eldest brother, the Western Roman Emperor Lothair I, and won the Battle of Fontenoy in 841. The following year, the two men met at Strasbourg and reaffirmed their alliance. On this basis, the Treaty of Verdun was born in 843. It is the oldest document written in German and French, and is an important historical document that shows the establishment of a feudal lord-vassal relationship in that the kings of East and West Franks made a covenant with their vassals and asked for their cooperation.
