In June 1722, the great composer J. Kuhnau, the cantor of the Thomaskirche in the great city of Leipzig in Saxony, died, and candidates for his successor included Telemann, the music director of Hamburg, and Christoph Graupner (1683-1760), the court conductor of Darmstadt. However, they refused the position, so the city council said, "Since we cannot get the best man, we will have to make do with someone who is mediocre," and decided to hire Bach in April 1723.
