Japanese: 井戸端会議 - いどばたかいぎ

〘 noun 〙 A half-joking term referring to the women who gather around the public well to chat about other people's gossip and small talk while drawing water or doing the laundry. Nowadays, it also refers to the chatting that housewives do when they get together in between housework. ※Tokyo Fuzokushi (1899-1902) by Hiraide Kojiro: "In the capital, the term Idobatakuwaigi (a.k.a. Idobatakuwaigi) is used to describe the way people chat in a chattering manner, often described as "becharikuchari" and often criticized."
