Branch and twig borer

Japanese: ナガシンクイ(長心喰) - ナガシンクイ(英語表記)branch and twig borer
Branch and twig borer
A general term for insects in the family Bostrychidae of the order Coleoptera. Over 400 species have been recorded from around the world, but they are mainly found in the tropics. Approximately 10 species are known from Japan. Many of the larvae bore holes into wood and bamboo, and often cause damage to houses and furniture. Some species also cause damage to food such as grains. Most adults are brown or black and cylindrical. When viewed from behind, the thorax covers the head, and the front half has a row of small projections in a concentric semicircle. The antennae have 3 to 4 segments at the top that are comb-shaped or wide.
