White wisteria - White wisteria

A deciduous shrub of the Buddlejaceae family. It resembles Buddleja japonica, but can be distinguished by its rounded branches and almost entire leaves. The undersides of the leaves are white and have many star-shaped hairs. Purple flowers bloom from July to October. The stems, leaves, and fruits contain pungent essential oils and saponins, and are poisonous. It is distributed in Shikoku, Kyushu, and Okinawa. The basic species has few hairs on the undersides of the leaves and is called Buddleja japonica.

フジウツギ科の落葉低木。フジウツギに似ているが、枝が円く、葉はほぼ全縁なので区別できる。葉裏には星状毛が多くて白い。7～10月に紫色の花が開く。茎葉、果実に刺激性精油およびサポニンを含み、有毒である。四国、九州、沖縄に分布する。基本種は葉裏に毛の少ないもので、コフジウツギという。
