1839‐1908 Italian politician. Born in Palermo, he graduated from the city's university. He served as mayor of Palermo (1864), governor of the province of Palermo (1866), and governor of Naples (1868), before becoming Minister of the Interior in 1869. He succeeded Crispi in both his first term in power (1891-92 and 1896-98). During his first term, he was known for cutting spending so much that he was called a "stingy government."
