Nakajiroshitaba (English spelling) Sweet potato leaf worm

A moth belonging to the family Noctuidae, order Lepidoptera, class Insecta. Wing span is 30-35 mm. The forewings are mostly blackish brown with 4-5 small white spots in the center and a black line running underneath. The hindwings are white near the base and blackish brown on the outer half. This moth is from warm regions and emerges 3-4 times a year. Adults can be seen from spring to autumn, are nocturnal, and often fly to lights. The larvae are pests that feed on sweet potato leaves, and sometimes occur in large outbreaks, causing great damage. The larvae are about 45 mm long, slender, and have short, almost inconspicuous setae. The ground color is gray-blue with dense black spots, and often appears black overall. There is an orange line on the back. The mature larvae overwinter in cocoons underground, and emerge in spring to pupate. The emergence is irregular, and larvae can be found from spring to autumn. They are distributed over a wide area from central Honshu south to the entire Ryukyu Islands, Asia, the South Pacific Islands, Australia, Africa, and Europe. Adults can be found sporadically in autumn in the Tohoku region, but they are not native to cold regions.
