Nagashima Rebellion

Japanese:
Nagashima Rebellion

The Ikko Ikki uprising took place between 1570 and 1574 (Genki 1 and Tensho 2). In September 1570, the Ikko Ikki, centered around Ishiyama Honganji Temple, entered into an all-out war (the Ishiyama War) with Oda Nobunaga that lasted for the next 11 years. However, an uprising centered around Ganshoji Temple in Nagashima (Nagashima-cho, Kuwana City, Mie Prefecture), a delta at the mouth of the Kiso River, also rose up in response to a call from Honganji Kennyo, and in November attacked Nobunaga's younger brother Nobuoki at Owari Ogie Castle, defeating him and killing him. In response, Nobunaga attacked Nagashima three times in total. In the two battles in 1571 and 1573, Nobunaga struggled against the rebel forces, who made use of the unique Waju (circle surrounding the castle) to wage guerilla warfare, and only managed to pacify the area around northern Ise. In July 1574, Nobunaga launched an all-out attack on Nagashima with a large army, both land and sea, killing many of the rebel followers and winning the victory at the end of September. Nobunaga then attacked the rebel forces who had offered peace and opened the castle to the public, killing 20,000 of their followers. With the defeat of the Nagashima Rebellion, the power of the Honganji sect in the three provinces of Mino, Owari, and Ise had to submit to Nobunaga.
