A city on the shores of Lake Erie in northeastern Ohio, USA. Population 23,449 (1980). The city's name means "river with fish" in Algonquin Indian. Located at the mouth of the river of the same name, it is a port for importing and exporting iron ore and coal from the Great Lakes. Founded by immigrants from New England, the city had strong anti-slavery sentiment and was a stopover on the Underground Railroad, a secret organization that helped fugitive slaves before the Civil War. Hubbard House, one of the Underground Railroad stations, is still located in the northern part of the city. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
