It is a hairy green alga that grows in rice paddies and ditches in the Okinawa region, and its Japanese name comes from the fact that it has a spherical egg-laying organ at the end of its body, which resembles a paper lantern. The body is multinucleated, 40-110 μm in diameter and up to 10 cm in height, and is regularly branched into a fork shape with constrictions at the base of the branches. However, there are no septa separating the cells. Because the body is multinucleated and tubular, it is often classified in the order Myrales (or Polytrichum), along with marine green algae such as Myrtle and Rock Creeping Tussock. However, some scholars have established the order Dictyosiphonales, emphasizing its characteristics such as sexual reproduction by eggs and sperm and the presence of chlorophyll-free white bodies in addition to chloroplasts (Feldmann J.Feldmann, 1954).
