Nagasaki Ageha (Great Mormon)

Nagasaki Ageha (Great Mormon)

A butterfly belonging to the family Papilionidae in the order Lepidoptera of the class Insecta. In Japan, it is usually found in the plains and low mountain areas of Kyushu and the southern half of Shikoku, and is widely distributed in the Nansei Islands further south, but is rare in the Yaeyama Islands. It first appeared in Yamaguchi Prefecture in the Chugoku region in the 1930s, and has since spread eastward through the Chugoku region, now spreading to Kyoto Prefecture. It is considered to have already established itself in Wakayama Prefecture, but this is presumed to have originated in the eastern part of Shikoku. Sporadic individuals found in Nara, Osaka, and Mie prefectures in recent years have likely spread from Wakayama Prefecture. Outside of Japan, it is widely distributed in the tropical Orient, from Nepal, Myanmar (Burma), Thailand, the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Borneo, and Java. The wingspan is about 110 to 125 mm. Males have black wings and no tail. Females have black-brown upper wings with white spots on the hind wings; they are usually tailless, but occasionally tailed. Notable features include the lack of a tail and an orange-red spot at the base of the underside of the fore and aft wings of both males and females, which is not found in other black swallowtails found in Japan. In northern Kyushu, they emerge three times a year, with the first generation appearing in May, the second generation from late June to early July, and the third generation from mid-to-late August. In the Ryukyu Islands, they emerge even more frequently. Their flight is slower than that of other black swallowtails. The larvae feed on Rutaceae plants such as various citrus fruits and trifoliate oranges. They do not feed on plants from the same Rutaceae family, such as peppers, yellowfin tuna, and Japanese knotweed.
