The Congo (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo) is a colony in Central Africa that was established as a private property by Belgian King Leopold II. In the late 19th century, Leopold II, who planned to expand into Africa alongside the European powers, sent Stanley to the Congo River basin and concluded a total of 400 protectionist treaties with local chiefs, placing the region under the control of his private organization, the International Society of the Congo (established in 1878). The European and American powers recognized the Society's sovereignty over the Congo at the Berlin Conference (1884-85), and the Society was reorganized as the Congo Free State (1885), with Leopold II becoming its king as well.
