The most important ore mineral of zinc. Its ideal chemical composition is ZnS (same as wurtzite), but some of the Zn is replaced by Fe, Mn, Cd, etc. Its structure is such that every other C atom in diamond is replaced by Zn and S. Pure ZnS is pale yellow, transparent, and has a resinous luster, but as the Fe content increases it becomes black and has a submetallic luster, and is often called sphaertite. Cubic crystal system. It is often tetrahedral, hexahedral (cubic), or a combination of these. Mohs hardness 3.5-4, specific gravity 3.9-4.1.
