Film director. Born in Kyoto City. Graduated from Ikuei Commercial High School. Joined Makino in 1929. Debuted with "Yumi-ya Hachiman-no-tsurugi" (1934) at Ichikawa Utaemon Productions. Later transferred to Toho, where he worked on films starring Enomoto Kenichi, such as "Enoken no Mori no Ishimatsu" (1939) and "Enoken no Yajikita" (1939). After the war, he released ghost stories starring Amachi Shigeru, such as "Tōkaidō Yotsuya Kaidan" (1959) and "Hell" (1960), at Shintoho, and was highly praised for his directing that elicited a sense of fear. Other works include "The Man Who Challenges the Eight Million Stones" (1961), "Ghost Story: Snake Woman" (1968), and "Strange Stories: Alive Saheiji" (1982). 映画監督。京都市生れ。育英商業卒。1929年マキノに入社。市川右太衛門プロの《弓矢八幡剣》(1934年)でデビュー。後に東宝へ移籍し,《エノケンの森の石松》(1939年)や《エノケンの弥次喜多》(1939年)など主に榎本健一主演の作品を手がける。戦後は新東宝で天知茂主演の《東海道四谷怪談》(1959年),《地獄》(1960年)などの怪談物を発表し,恐怖感を引き出す演出で高い評価を得た。ほかに《八百万石に挑む男》(1961年),《怪談・蛇女》(1968年),《怪異談・生きてゐる左平次》(1982年)などがある。
