Istros; Ister
Also called Ister. The name given by the ancient Greeks to the lower reaches of the Danube. During the Roman expedition in the 1st century BCE, it was discovered to be the same river as the Danubius, which referred to the upper and middle reaches of the Danube. During the Roman period, it played an important role as a natural border.
